In 1901, by authority of the Alabama Constitution, Article V, Section 124, the attorney general, secretary of state, and state auditor were named members of an advisory Board of Pardons which assists the governor by submitting written opinions regarding the granting of paroles, pardons, and revocations. In 1935, the Board of Pardons was succeeded by the Parole Bureau. This series consists of correspondence transferring indeterminate sentence convicts to the Convict Department to serve out the minimum or maximum term of sentence. These records contain lists of prisoners and a recommendation from the Board of Pardons regarding the amount of time the criminals should serve before becoming eligible for parole. These records were created under the Board of Pardons (1901-1935) and the Parole Bureau (1935-1939) during the administration of Governors Bibb Graves (1927-1931 and 1935-1939) and Benjamin Meek Miller (1931-1935).
